Microbes exert immense influence on the physiology of their hosts, and Caenorhaditis elegans is no different. Defining the natural ecology of C. elegans has illustrated that microbes not only act as potential food or pathogen, but can also colonize its intestines as simple communities (or ‘microbiomes’). Based on the core natural microbiome of C. elegans, we present a new 12-member model microbiome (CeMbio) with a wealth of resources from robust protocols to sequenced genomes to metabolic models. These tools will open the door to investigation of any aspect of C. elegans biology in a more natural context.
