Purine biosynthesis pathways are highly conserved in C. elegans. We describe the composition of the purine pathways in C. elegans, based on sequence homology with both yeast and humans and present HPLC metabolic profiling standard in worms, particularly concerning nucleotide metabolism. We present developmental phenotypes in C. elegans purine mutants, particularly Adenylosuccinate lyase deficiency: vulval defects, fertility, embryonic lethality and post-embryonic developmental timing. We further present the metabolic profiles of C. elegans treated with AICAR - both wild-type and mutants deficient for the purine de novo synthesis pathway. Finally we present data describing the analysis of neuromuscular function in purine mutants: Aldicard and Levamisole treatments and mechanosensory response test.
